Do you have a civil legal problem and need help? There is a community of civil legal aid organizations that may be able to help. 

The following are examples of civil legal problems:

  • Landlord/ Tenant: rent or breach of lease
  • Debt: credit care, car loan, or home mortgage
  • Immigration: detention or deportation
  • Public Benefits: unemployment, SNAP, TCA

If you are a tenant facing a landlord-tenant issue or court case, there is a new law in Maryland (the Access to Counsel in Evictions law) that gives you a right to access an attorney for free if you fall below a certain income. Call 211 now to get connected to a housing specialist who can connect you to a housing attorney or go to this website https://legalhelpmd.org/ to do an online intake.

Maryland People’s Law Library

The Maryland People’s Law Library exists to provide legal information to the public. They explain different civil legal topics in plain language on their website, https://www.peoples-law.org/

Law Libraries

Maryland Law Libraries are a good and reliable source of up-to-date legal information. Law librarians cannot give legal advice, but they are information experts and can help you if you do not have a lawyer. Maryland Court Help Centers offer free legal information, brief advice and referrals to anyone who does not have a lawyer in a civil legal case. Anyone with any income can use this service. You can receive help in these ways:
